Member Spotlight: Stephanie Nguyen

As the daughter of Vietnamese refugees who fled the Vietnam War by boat, Stephanie Nguyen’s deep commitment to public service was shaped by her family's early hardships. Growing up in Sacramento’s Little Saigon district and experiencing life in a low-income household fueled her lifelong passion for helping those most in need. Today, Nguyen stands as a dedicated changemaker, a powerful voice for the Sacramento and Elk Grove communities, and a proud member of the California Problem Solvers Caucus.

For over 15 years, Nguyen has served as the Executive Director of Asian Resources, Inc. (ARI), where she ensures that vulnerable populations—including immigrants, refugees, and low-income families—have access to essential support to achieve self-sufficiency. During the global pandemic, her leadership was vital; she spearheaded efforts to establish trusted community testing and vaccine sites while leading the distribution of millions of dollars in relief funds to struggling families.

Nguyen’s impact extends seamlessly into local government. In 2017, she made history as the first Asian American woman appointed to the Elk Grove City Council, subsequently winning a citywide election and serving as Vice Mayor in 2020. Her tenure has been defined by tangible, community-focused results. As a member of Elk Grove's Homelessness Task Force, she was instrumental in securing $5 million in state funding for housing and services, directly contributing to Elk Grove having the lowest homeless rate in the county. Furthermore, she spearheaded a vital rental assistance program during the pandemic that supported both renters and landlords, keeping families in their homes.

A fierce advocate for healthy neighborhoods, Nguyen has consistently worked alongside local law enforcement to curb gang violence and strongly combat the rise in Asian hate crimes. Drawing on her robust background in business and finance, she champions economic development by supporting small business owners and fighting for a stronger economy for working-class families. Stephanie Nguyen remains an inspiring leader, advancing policies that improve the lives of all residents in her district.
