Member Spotlight: Assemblymember Anamarie Ávila Farías—A Champion of Practical Solutions

Assemblymember Ávila Farías, who proudly represents California’s 15th Assembly District, is widely recognized as a dedicated public servant and advocate for working families. Her commitment to tackling complex statewide challenges is cemented by her vital leadership role as the Co-Chair of the Legislative Problem Solvers Caucus. Ávila Farías brings decades of experience in affordable housing, economic development, and educational equity to Sacramento, driven by a personal history of overcoming socioeconomic challenges.

The Assembly has tapped into her expertise by appointing her to co-chair the newly formed Select Committee on Housing Finance and Affordability. This appointment tasks her explicitly with finding ways state policies can support housing development and bring down costs for California families.

As a co-chair of the Problem Solvers Caucus, she champions legislation that delivers tangible results. Her housing package includes solutions such as AB 874, which proposes waiving most impact and development fees for residential projects that reserve at least 49% of units for affordable housing. She is also addressing the root causes of homelessness through AB 722, which provides five-year renewable grants to fund evidence-based housing and employment interventions for people with recent histories of incarceration.

Assemblymember Ávila Farías’s problem-solving approach spans multiple sectors. She successfully authored AB 1034, which is now Chaptered, requiring beginning teachers to possess a basic understanding of youth mental health to address California’s ongoing crisis. Furthermore, she authored the Reducing California’s High Cost of Living Act (AB 1232), which would require state agencies to assess the potential adverse economic impacts on businesses and individuals—particularly regarding the cost of living—when proposing administrative regulations.
